Roxane Butterfly masterclasses 23rd & 24th April
We are delighted to welcome the amazing French tap dancer Roxane Butterfly back to London! A long time supporter of London Tap Jam, and a leader in tap dance in Europe and around the world, Roxane will be teaching three masterclasses to help support our big relaunch party at Zigfrid von Underbelly.
Roxane was mentored by legendary bebop hoofer Jimmy Slyde, who gave her the name “Butterfly.” Now based in Barcelona, Roxane is the founder and director of the Jimmy Slyde Institute, the purpose of which is to preserve, present and create new ways for contemporary tap dancing.
Classes at Pineapple Dance Studios:
- Jazz-house Fusion Warm Up: The Swinging Body - suitable for beginners and dancers new to tap. 5:30-7pm, Saturday 23rd April.
- What Is This Thing Called Swing? - intermediate/advanced. Roxane will teach her choreography based on the tap masters and explore how to draw from them the keys to dancing with a swing feel. 2-3.30pm, Sunday 24th April.
- Musicality and Guide to Improvisation - intermediate/advanced. Roxane shares skills gained from over 20 years reflecting on the practice of improvisation with live music. 3.30-5pm, Sunday 24th April.
Tickets £25 each, with discount prices available until 17th April. Please note that class sizes are strictly limited to provide the best experience for all participants, so advance booking is recommended.

Roxane Butterfly was born in France and adopted New York City as her home-base for twenty years, where she was mentored by legendary bebop hoofer Jimmy Slyde, who gave her the name “Butterfly.” Among her numerous marks of distinction she holds a Bessie Award for Outstanding Creative Achievement and a fellowship from the notorious John Simon Guggeheim Foundation.
The "underground tap dance icon", she has been called by The New York times “the John Coltraine of Dance.” Now based in Barcelona, Roxane is the founder and director of the Jimmy Slyde Institute, the purpose of which is to preserve, present and create new ways for contemporary tap dancing. Roxane Butterfly has for more than 20 years been one of the most prominent people in the art form of tap.
